The Napoli-Bari Highway Tunnel project forms part of a major infrastructure development designed to improve transportation connections and rail accessibility in southern Italy. The construction works included the development of an arched viaduct structure on the Napoli-Cancello railway, requiring highly specialized formwork and support systems capable of meeting complex geometric and operational demands.
Due to the challenging tunnel portal geometry and the need to maintain efficient construction workflows, the project required tailor-made formwork solutions that combined structural stability, adaptability and fast assembly processes.
Hünnebeck delivered a comprehensive engineered solution using INFRA-KIT H beams, T50 trusses and MANTO panels, together with a custom-designed self-propelled carrier system capable of transporting up to 8.1 m (87 ft) of tunnel formwork.
The project presented significant engineering challenges related to the construction of the arched viaduct and tunnel portal structures. The temporary works solution had to accommodate varying structural heights while maintaining precise alignment and stability throughout the construction process.
The tunnel portal design included complex arch geometries and circular openings, requiring tailor-made formwork solutions specifically engineered for the project’s unique structural requirements.
At the same time, minimizing disruption to the surrounding area and ensuring efficient project execution were key priorities. The project therefore demanded a flexible, reusable and operationally efficient system capable of accelerating installation processes while maintaining high structural performance and safety standards.
Hünnebeck developed and delivered a customized formwork and support solution designed specifically for the demanding requirements of the Napoli-Bari Highway Tunnel project.
The use of INFRA-KIT H beams combined with T50 trusses provided a strong and reliable structural solution for the tunnel portal and arched viaduct construction. The system’s adaptability allowed efficient use across varying heights and changing site conditions.
Tailor-made formwork components were engineered to accommodate the complex arch shapes and round openings within the structure, ensuring accuracy, efficiency and high-quality concrete finishes.
The independent self-propelled carrier system enabled the safe and efficient transportation of large tunnel formwork sections, significantly improving operational workflows on site.
In addition, the use of MANTO panels reduced assembly times while allowing repeated reuse of panels throughout multiple construction phases, supporting both project efficiency and sustainability objectives.
Through engineered expertise, operational efficiency and adaptable system design, Hünnebeck contributed significantly to the successful execution of this major railway infrastructure project.
