Formwork, shoring and engineering solutions for a major urban metro infrastructure project

Scope

The Warsaw Metro 2nd Line is one of the most ambitious urban infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Poland's capital. BrandSafway was brought on board to support general contractors across five underground stations, a depot and associated facilities, providing solutions, equipment and expertise throughout the entire construction programme.

The project encompassed an exceptionally wide range of structural demands: thick ceiling slabs, deep foundations, station platforms, columns, walls and complex architectural concrete elements. Each required a tailored approach, combining the right systems with thorough technical design and hands-on site support.

A particularly notable aspect of the scope was the development of bespoke downstream concreting valves and special formwork moulds for architectural elements – purpose-engineered solutions that reflect the depth of technical involvement BrandSafway brought to this project from the outset.

Challenge

Working in an active urban environment with tight logistical constraints, BrandSafway faced engineering challenges rarely encountered in above-ground construction. Ceiling slabs up to 1.5 metres (16 ft) thick imposed extreme loads that ruled out conventional shoring approaches, requiring temporary supports with a capacity of up to 870 t / 959 t via the INFRA-KIT engineering system.

For the deep structural shafts, ground-bearing supports were not a viable option. The solution: suspending TOPFLEX formwork directly from INFRA-KIT H beams – eliminating traditional supports entirely and significantly improving safety and efficiency in confined underground conditions.

Performance

BrandSafway delivered a fully integrated temporary works package across all five stations and the depot. Custom downstream concreting valves and bespoke formwork moulds addressed the project's architectural and structural demands. INFRA-KIT-based shoring handled ceiling loads of up to 870 t / 959 t, while the innovative TOPFLEX suspension system enabled safe, efficient shaft construction without ground-bearing supports.

MANTO and RASTO wall formwork served foundations, columns and walls throughout; TOPEC slab formwork was used for station platforms. The result: a decisive contribution to one of Warsaw's most complex and consequential construction projects.
